![]() Super Hexagon is about testing your reflexes, reaction speed, memorization, and your instincts, pushing them beyond your self imposed limitations.Ĭolors are constantly changing in the levels, all while the geometric shapes pulse to the wonderful soundtrack by Chipzel. The difficulty here isn’t in that the game is abusing you, but more that your own abilities are being put to the test. The premise sounds simple enough but I wouldn’t doubt it if you hear “Game Over” at least a dozen times before you finally last longer than five seconds. Shapes will be moving in one way, while the entire level could be spinning in another direction, all while you have to be aware of every potential threat coming at you from every direction. And I’m not joking when I say you might feel pain around your forehead. The overall goal is to last as long as possible without getting crushed between two walls while you’re zig-zagging your way through the endless maze. Levels are randomly generated, while specific pattern configurations are repeated at different points with each replay. Tapping the screen will move the triangle ever so slightly, while holding down on the screen will see the shape moving at top speeds.Ĭontrols are very responsive, and they need to be as walls in the shape of geometric patterns are constantly advancing toward the center of the level. Touching the right side of your screen will move the triangle clockwise, and the left side of the screen moves you counter-clockwise. You control a little triangle that’s stationed within the center of the screen. What makes Super Hexagon such an addictive experience is its simplicity. Best of all, you will come away from each play session feeling sharper, and more energized than you did before loading up Super Hexagon. You will feel your mind bend as you replay levels over and over, experiencing both bliss that you’ve increased your record by a mere second, and anger that your reaction speed failed to save you from a crushing death. It will even, at times, make you question whether you’re enjoying the experience or it’s simply the pulsating visuals sending you subliminal messages that trick you into revelry. It is a game that makes your brain feel like it’s being torn up and stitched back together by a drunken doctor in a back alley. I also wrote some articles on the game's internals. If you have any question about the game itself or any implementation detail, feel free to ask here on or the official Discord server - we have a channel dedicated to level development via Lua scripting and a channel dedicated to the development of the C++17 engine. The game is written in modern C++17, and it's completely open-source. YouTube: Open Hexagon - Custom Level Aesthetics I've seen incredible creations, ranging from brand new games implemented as Open Hexagon levels, to "Bad Apple!!" being embedded in the game via a matrix of moving walls. However, the most important thing is that Open Hexagon features a powerful Lua scripting system, allowing people to create their own levels. Open Hexagon expands upon the original's concept by adding features such as a 180° swap move, curving walls, and more. YouTube: Open Hexagon - Steam Release Trailer Note that Terry Cavanagh fully endorses the project! The basic concept is quite simple: you are a small triangle, and you need to avoid the incoming obstacles by spinning around the center of the screen. Open Hexagon is a spiritual successor to Super Hexagon, a popular indie game that was created by Terry Cavanagh back in 2012. I am proud to show you my first completed game, Open Hexagon, now available on Steam and itch.io for Windows and Linux.
